PAYMENT OF traffic fines can now be paid with the click of a mouse, while payment of them at police stations will be phased out in a month.
As well as online, payments can be made at commercial banks and co-ops.
"Our aim is so that the payment of the fine, instead of taking place at a police station, from now on, can take place from the home, the office and from anywhere that there's access to the internet, even from abroad," said Police Chief Michalis Papageorgiou.
"It is in an effort to save precious time and money for the public and for police staff, so that people won't need to go to a police station to pay their fines," he added.
One of the objectives of the police is to eventually expand the programme to cover all other offences including fines imposed by the court.
The online system will function in conjunction with the state's accounts office and JCC SMART system for online payments, including the online renewal of road tax. The police website will also be linked directly to the JCC system.
As well as being convenient and quick, the system also boasts safety according to Christos Drakou, Assistant Manager of the Department of Studies and Development for the police. He reassures that the correct security measures have been taken so that the payments can go ahead without a hitch.
Papageorgiou highlighted that the new system will allow police officers who were originally assigned to such tasks to be re-assigned and used elsewhere. "We have already given instructions for a study to be done to record how many members could be spared and in what other duties they could be used," he said.
