FED: The three options for the republic question
CANBERRA, Aug 9 AAP - The three questions considered by the federal government for the
November 6 referendum on the republic.
The original question proposed by the government:
An Act to alter the Constitution to establish the Commonwealth of Australia as a republic
with a President chosen by a two-thirds majority of the members of the Commonwealth
Parliament.
Do you approve of this proposed law?
The bipartisan parliamentary committee recommendation:
An Act to alter the Constitution to establish the Commonwealth of Australia as a republic,
with the Queen and Governor-General being replaced by an Australian President.
Do you approve of this proposed law?
The government's compromise question, announced by Prime Minister John Howard today:
An Act to alter the Constitution to establish the Commonwealth of Australia as a republic
with the Queen and Governor-General being replaced by a President appointed by a two-thirds
majority of the members of the Commonwealth Parliament.
