NSW: Orthopaedic surgeons may be forced to leave profession
The organisation representing orthopaedic surgeons says they'll be forced out of theprofession -- or only be able to carry out low-risk procedures -- because of the medicalindemnity crisis.
The Australian Society of Orthopaedic Surgeons says many surgeons will be forced togive up their practices if Australia's leading medical insurer UMP goes into liquidation.
Yesterday UMP announced it will apply to appoint a provisional liquidator.
The society's national co-ordinator STEPHEN MILGATE says many orthopaedic surgeons, especially those in the high-risk area of spinal and neurological surgery, will leavethe profession.
He says members of the society will meet on Sunday to discuss the issue.
